This is a tankless gas water heater in a 2 year old house. With this type of water heater, water is heated on demand rather than storing hot water in a tank. This type of water heater typically costs less to operate and lasts longer than a traditional storage water heater. Some Arizona builders are now installing tankless water heaters in the new homes they build.

The tankless water heating system can easily last 20 years or more with normal maintenance. That’s twice as long as the standard tank heater. Add to that the lifestyle benefits of being able to enjoy endless hot water when you want it and for as long as you need it, while saving money on energy costs, and water.

Generally, 20 percent of a home’s energy use comes from heating water for bathing, washing dishes, laundry, and cooking. Annually, this can add up to more than $450 to operate a conventional storage water heater.
